3rd overall at European Championships 2011!

In the last tourstop of the KTE 2011 I managed to maintain my 3rd overall position!

It was a hard competition in St. Gilles Croix-de-Vie, with light wind and strong current, big Atlantic waves and a strong field of competitors. In the Single elimination I managed to win my heat to the quarter finals, but thereI met Frenchy Seb Garat who was the stronger rider in this heat.

In between of the competitions we did a lot of wavesurfing, it was a lot of fun and very good weather for this season.

In the Double eliminations I had to ride against a French local rider, who was putting up a strong fight. I managed to win the heat by landing all of my tricks except for a switch flat3. In the next round I had to face Mike Schitzhofer from Austria, who was landing more tricks in the heat, taking the win over me. This put me in a final position of 7th place, but still giving me enough ranking points to be 3rd place overall in the 2011 European Championships!

I will post some photos of the ceremony later today, there are also updates on my Facebook fanpage “Tijn van Esch Kiteboarding

5th place EKT Italy

Here is my update about KTE Italy, it took me a while…

Short story:
The temperature in Italy was awesome, but the wind was a bit light. We enjoyed the riders lounge so much, the local organisation really did everything in their power to make us feel home. In my first couple of heats I did okay, but in the quarter finals I was up against Italian rider Martinelli who is riding really strong in light winds. I had a really good heat, landing about 14 handlepasses. But the heat got cancelled due to wind limits, and we had a rerun. This time I did good as well, but Martinelli was a little bit stronger and he won. I was disappointed about the decision, but that is the risk of judging sports. I ended up 5th place, still securing my 3rd place in the overall ranking!

Next competition is France next week, and I will publish a movie about the riders in the KTE soon!

3rd place Eurotour Germany!

Hey all,

The competition season is in full progress, after several events this year I went to the first stop of the KTE. Last year I managed to get an overall 6th place, this year I wanted to ride top 10 again.

The first stop was on Sylt, which is known for its gnarly conditions. Large powerfull waves and strong wind dominated the tourstop, but I managed to ride quite okay. Because of my ranking, I was seeded pretty well (up in the 4th round). My first heat was against fellow Dutch rider Bram Bast, and I did not ride that well. I managed to win the heat just because I had 1 trick more, but this really woke me up and made me realize these conditions where not to be laughed at. In the next heat, I managed to beat Nils Wesch. It was a close decision because we did similar tricks, but my clean Kiteloop Slim made the judges pick me as the winner.
Then I was up against PKRA top rider Sebastian Garat, and I was pretty sure I would lose the heat. I did my best, and managed to land a Kiteloop HP, Kiteloop backroll HP and a Kiteloop Slim in a row. Garat did not do more then me so I also won this heat! I was super happy to be in the finals for the first time on a international event. I had to take on Mario Rodwald, he was riding a bit stronger by having more variation and so he won this heat.

In the doubles, I was waiting for the competition and my opponent turned out to be Garat for the 2nd place. This time, Garat was riding a bit stronger, but I did a mega big Kiteloop Hp and some decent passes. Unfortunately I mistimed my watch so I did not knew the last minute was already there. I was riding upwind to go for a final trick (kiteloop slim) But when I turned to the judges the red flag was already up. The win went to Garat, who eventually got beaten by Mario Rodwald again.

5 Jerrie van de Kop

The next day we started a Kiteloop competition, where we were supposed to do the biggest kiteloop with the kite low. The wind was quite strong, about 25/30 knots. I did okay, but in the semifinal I lost against Dutchie Jerrie van de Kop, who won the Kiteloop Contest in the end!

On sunday I was not planning to ride because I was feeling a bit sick, but the organisation convinced me to ride in the Best Trick competition. I did good, just going for the biggest Kiteloop slim possible (over 20 knots on my 9) and I managed to land it in every heat so I won the Best Trick! The organisation sent me home with a nice prize, cash and a super nice headphone from Philips|Oneill!

Pics will follow when I am home.

Now we are in Lamezia (Italy) for the 2nd stop of the KTE. So far not enough wind to start but I will keep you updated.

PKRA France 2011

Hello, once more I write to you from the sunny (but sometimes also rainy) Leucate. We arrived on wednesday evening in our newly restored T3 van, which drove the 1600km with ease.
It has been a while since my last update, I was busy with restoring the van and school in the past few months. I will try to be more up to date when the season starts off (now).
The video of Brasil is still in the making, I hope to finish it  this week.

Okay, PKRA. Because of the new rules there is almost allways a trial round to get in the main event. in this case, there was space for 14 entrants. 10 heats of 3 where the best would place directly into the main event, then 8 heats of 3 where the best of the heat would advance to the next round where they have to win once more to get in the main event.
The wind was going up and down all day, so I had my 8,10 and 12 ready on the beach. When it was allmost my turn the wind dropped and the competition was posponed. After some riding on the lagoon (it was possible to ride there because there is no current) and lunch the wind picked up a bit and the organisation cleared the lagoon for the competition! I had to wait 1 heat, and then it was my turn. I was riding against Hurtado (VEN) and Wesch (GER) powered on my 12 in really gusty winds. I had a good opening with a lowmobe followed by a b2blind airpass. then I did a 313(crash), blind judge, powered slim chance, 313(crash), blind judge3(crash), 313, switch kgb(crash) and a frontmobe (crashed). a lot of tricks but also a lot of crashes. Luckily I managed to stay upwind during the heat and only dropped my kite once. I won the heat, so now I am in the main event. More news to come!

Update 1
We started off early today with a 8.30 skippersmeeting and 9.00 first heat. Unfortunately the wind was a bit too light, so the heats where finally posponed to 11.00. Then it started to become strong wind, and in my heat (heat 4) I was powered on 8m. My opponent was Hilario (DOM).

I started off well with a backmobe and 313 in the first tack. Then a railey to blind, slim chance and kiteloop. Then the wind dropped a lot and I had no power to do anything. I crashed a switch kgb. Then in the gusts I managed to do a kgb and switch railey to blind, but had not enough power to land my frontblind and frontmobe. I was not too unhappy with the heat, but the Domenican kicked my butt with a tricklist twice as long… So better luck tomorrow in the Doubles, now the event is cancelled because of heavy rain and thunder. I think we are halfway the singles now, did not pay too much attention because we tried to get our kites in the car before the rain hehe.

Update 2
Okay, the event is finished now. Yesterday we finished the singles and right after the double eliminations started. I was in heat 5, against Portas (ES). The wind was booming, so I only pumped my 6m. This was the right decision, because I was overpowered on it. When the heat started I went for a backmobe, but did not catch the bar in the gusty wind. Then I did a railey to blind, sbend and a powered blind judge. The rest of the heat I struggled to do tricks, the wind was way too gusty and strong. So then I decided to do a kiteloop, it turned into some kind of mega mega loop with delayed backroll on my wrong side, but I saved my ass on the landing with a small butt check. I think it was the biggest landed loop of the day, and it even lead to a Judges decision of 3-2 for Portas. I was surprised about this because he did way more tricks than me. Even though, I lost so I was out of the event.
Today I was up for the Best Trick co,p, in the 1st heat of the day. I went out on 6m again, but this was a bit too light for big air jumps unfortunately.. Cruz (DOM) took the win with more height, fully overpowered on a 9!! Insane boys, those Dominicans. So that was my first PKRA experience of the year, not a very good result but still I am happy to have made it into the event. Better luck next time, now we will leave to Italy for a couple of days kiting and then on to Podersdorf in Austria for the Team competition during the huge Surfing Worldcup overthere.

3rd Place NK Kite and Brasil 2010!

Hey all, last weekend I participated in the Dutch Nationals, and made it up to the 3rd place in the single and double elimination. I will write a report on this shortly, now I just arrived in Cumbuco, Brasil! Had a good flight of 8 hours (Amsterdam-Fortaleza) and now I am super hungry so we will have some dinner first!

Report of the nationals:
This year we had to wait for the nationals untill the very last date, but the forecast looked promising. The temperature was kind of low, around 10 degrees, and there was a lot of rain.
We went to Scheveningen on friday to train for 1 day on the spot, and it went pretty well. Unfortunately the wind changed a bit for the weekend, so it was offshore on saturday.
Saturday we went to the inscription early, we were the first to register. It was super cold, and I was in heat 2. I pumped my 6, 8 and 10 Kondor3 because it was super gusty, and did not went out before the heat because I was so cold. I was able to ride my 8m the whole day, but it was raining from time to time and it was super cold. I had not the best heat, but it was enough to win. I did a railey to blind, backmobe, 313 and flat3. The next round was a little better, I did a backmobe, slim, kiteloop, blind judge and a flat3 and took the win. In the 3rd round I met my friend Eddy Lansink, and we had a terrible heat with dropping winds but I managed to stay in the area long enough to do some tricks and take the win. Then I was in the semi finals against Bas Koole, and had not a really good heat. Only to the left I managed to land a mobe, slim and 313, to the right I only had attempts but did not manage to land tricks because of the super gusts. Bas took the win, and I had to ride in the losers final for the 3rd place against Geert-Jan Telkamp, also a Workum local. I had a difficult heat because it was super choppy and gusty, and Geert-Jan lost crashed hist kite and lost his kite so it was easy for me to win the heat. Then I had to wait for the double elimination. In the final, Bas Koole met Jerrie vd Kop and just after the start Bas lost his kite because of a broken line. I took a 9m from the beach and brought it to him so he could finish the heat, but the judges did not count any tricks from the moment he lost the kite (this is in the rules). Jerrie took the win in the single elimination on saturday.

On sunday I was pretty stoked to ride, the weather was a bit better with onshore wind and some sun. I saw Johnno Scholte come back from the 2nd round all the way to my heat. I took out my 10m, and went out pretty powered but I had a really good heat landing a backmobe, blind judge both ways, slim, 313, back to blind airpass, straight pass and a L3 (kiteloop backloop pass). In the next heat I met Bas Koole again, we both had a bad heat because of the current and dropping wind. I changed to 12m halfway out the heat, and managed to land a kgb, slim, 313, railey to blind, backmobe but crashed my frontmobe. It took the judges 10 minutes to decide the winner, and unfortunately for me Bas took the win on a 3-2 decision because of better execution (style). I was a little bummed, but still happy with a 3rd place. In the finals Bas had another shot against Jerrie, and he totally ripped it up while Jerrie was not riding his usual strength. Bas won, so they had to ride once more to decide the event winner. On the 2nd heat, Bas started off easy and slow, doing oldschool tricks while Jerrie was doing passes, but halfway out the heat Bas was riding better and Jerrie was crashing a lot. In the last minute, Bas landed a super clean kiteloop slim, and it was clear he won this heat aswell.

In the ladies category, the top 3 was riding okay. Especially Jalou Langeree was ripping, landing a blind judge and sbend pass. This made her the easy winner of the event.
Results female:
1. Jalou Langeree
2. Lisa van Ginkel
3. Marije den Breems

Results male:
1. Bas Koole
2. Jerrie van der Kop
3. Tijn van Esch

6th place overall Euro Tour!

Yeah, finally some time to do an update!

The last tourstop of the Euro Kite Tour took place in Swinoujscie, Poland. The forecast looked really strong, but the direction was offshore. We started on the first day, but the wind was super gusty. I won my first heat with the most underpowered tricks ever, but my opponent crashed his kite and never did any tricks. The 2nd heat I was too underpowered on my 10, but landed a mobe, slim and railey to blind, I switched to 12 in the last minute and did a back to blind airpass. The decision was 2-1 against, too bad. In the double elimination I had my first heat against a polish rider, I won the heat with more variety and power, landing allmost all of my tricks including a real powered mobe5. The 2nd heat was a really good one for me, I landed a backmobe, 313, blind judge, switch railey to blind, slim, super powered kgb and crashed my front blind mobe. Even though I thought I won, the judges decided I did at least 4 tricks outside of the competition area and therefore I lost on a 3-0 decision. I was upset with this result, and tried to speak about this with the judges because I was sure these tricks where not outside the box. This did not matter, so I ended up 13th. My worst result in the tour, but still enough points left to take the 6th place in overall! I am super happy with this overall result, best Dutchy in the tour, and will participate in the tour next year again!

1. Alberto Rondina (IT)
2. Mario Rodwald (DE)
3. Stefan Permien (DE)
4. Christophe Tack (BE)
5. Viktor Borsuk (PL)
6. Tijn van Esch (NL)
